The Maponya Mall branch in Soweto is currently seeking the services of a qualified and reputable Pharmacist. This role is an opportunity for an enthusiastic healthcare professional to make a direct impact by supporting patients with their medicine-related needs while working within a highly professional, ethical, and customer-focused retail environment.
Purpose of the Role
The Pharmacist will be responsible for providing pharmaceutical care, ensuring that patients’ medicine-related needs are properly met in accordance with professional, legal, and ethical standards. The successful candidate will be expected to dispense prescribed medication, provide expert advice on medicine usage, oversee pharmacy operations, and maintain accurate patient records.
In addition, the Pharmacist will work closely with the Dispensary Manager and support staff to ensure smooth day-to-day operations of the dispensary, while also playing a key role in maintaining compliance with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) regulations.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
 - BPharm or an equivalent pharmacy qualification.
 - Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
 - Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
 - At least 2–3 years of retail pharmacy experience (internship or student training included).
 - Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Office.
 
Advantageous:
- Previous experience in a retail or FMCG environment.
 - Knowledge of SAP or similar systems.
 - E-scripting experience.
 - Registered tutor with SAPC.
 - Proficiency in Unisolv.
 - Ability to communicate in a third South African language.
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The role of the Pharmacist at Dis-Chem Maponya Mall includes, but is not limited to:
Pharmaceutical Care & Dispensing
- Evaluate patients’ medicine-related needs to determine the safety, effectiveness, and appropriateness of prescribed therapy.
 - Dispense medication and scheduled substances as per authorised prescriptions.
 - Check and sign off all prescriptions prepared by assistants or interns, ensuring compliance with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).
 - Provide professional advice to patients on the correct use of medicines.
 - Monitor patient compliance and follow up to ensure effective treatment outcomes.
 - Offer pharmacist-initiated therapy where appropriate.
 
Operational & Regulatory Duties
- Supervise the compounding, manipulation, packaging, or preparation of medicines.
 - Manage the acquisition, storage, and supply of scheduled substances in compliance with legislation.
 - Assist in applications for medicine registrations as required by the Medicines and Pharmacy Acts.
 - Maintain proper registers and ensure accurate documentation for audits.
 
Customer Service & Patient Support
- Provide exceptional service to patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter, and front shop.
 - Clearly explain medical aid costs, claims processes, and prescription details to customers.
 - Support patients with chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medicine authorisations.
 - Ensure scripts are accurately captured, labelled, and cross-checked for errors or interactions.
 - Follow up with patients on script tracking and future appointments.
 
Stock & Cash Control
- Report on low-stock or out-of-stock medicines.
 - Assist in managing bi-annual stock takes.
 - Exercise strict cash and stock control measures.
 - Support the Dispensary Manager in monitoring and correcting stock variances.
 
Training & Leadership
- Lead by example in professional conduct and service delivery.
 - Mentor and train pharmacy support staff and interns.
 - Handle conflict management within the team when necessary.
 
Compliance & Housekeeping
- Follow all Dis-Chem policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and health and safety rules.
 - Maintain a clean, well-organised, and compliant dispensary environment.
 - Ensure adherence to Dis-Chem’s uniform and appearance policies.
