Position Overview
The role of Dispensary Support is designed to give learners the opportunity to complete the Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant course. This structured programme will introduce learners to the core principles of pharmacy operations, pharmaceutical practices, and dispensary support services.
During this fixed-term contract, candidates will work under the guidance and supervision of registered pharmacists. Once learners are successfully registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as Basic Pharmacist Assistants, they may be considered for permanent employment within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.
This role is perfect for individuals with a passion for healthcare, a keen eye for detail, and a desire to contribute to the safe dispensing of medicines and patient care.
Minimum Requirements
- 
Matric / Senior Certificate with:
- 
Pure Mathematics: Minimum 50%
 - 
Life Sciences or Physical Science: Minimum 50%
 - 
Overall average of at least 50%

Must successfully complete a proficiency test qualifying the applicant for registration with the SAPC as a Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
 - 
South African citizenship.
 - 
Clear criminal record and credit record.
 
Key Responsibilities
As part of the training and work exposure, the Dispensary Support learner will:
- 
Dispensing Support
- 
Assist pharmacists with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and scheduled substances in line with pharmacy regulations.
 - 
Support the compounding, manipulation, and preparation of non-sterile medicines under pharmacist supervision.
 - 
Learn to interpret prescriptions (scripts) accurately while maintaining professionalism and compliance with SAPC regulations.

Stock Management & Merchandising
- 
Assist in unpacking, organizing, and labeling stock in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
 - 
Help maintain clean, orderly dispensary and OTC shelves.
 - 
Monitor stock levels, report shortages, and check expiry dates on medicines.
 - 
Receive dispensary stock according to company SOP.
 
 -

Customer & Patient Care
- 
Answer patient queries in a professional and empathetic manner.
 - 
Follow up on script tracking reports and assist with scheduling patient appointments.
 - 
Handle call centre scripts and assist with patient service calls.
 - 
Provide basic information to promote health awareness and responsible medicine use.

Administrative & Scheme Support
- 
Assist with the authorization of chronic medication, including HIV, AIDS, and oncology treatments.
 - 
Ensure all dispensing records are captured accurately.
 - 
Support scheme authorization and liaise with medical aid service providers.
 
 - 
 - 
Quality & Safety Compliance
- 
Ensure all medicines dispensed are checked and signed off by a registered pharmacist.
 - 
Adhere to strict hygiene, safety, and legal standards in the dispensary.
 - 
Follow Dis-Chem’s internal SOPs and pharmacy protocols to maintain compliance.
 
 - 
 
Competencies & Skills
Essential Competencies:
- 
Ability to read, write, and speak English plus one other South African language.

Strong numerical and computer literacy skills.
 -

Advantageous Competencies:
- 
Prior retail pharmacy or FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) experience.

Familiarity with family planning and complementary medicine.
 - 
Experience using pharmacy systems such as Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting.
 - 
Previous customer service experience in a Dis-Chem front shop environment.
 
Special Conditions of Employment

Must complete and pass the proficiency test required for SAPC registration.

Must be a South African citizen with the ability to provide proof of identity.
 - 
Clear criminal record and credit history are required.
 -
